She studied sociology at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, receiving her doctorate in 1979, and dramaturgy at DAMU under the guidance of Jaroslav Vostrý and František Štěpánek. She followed a classic theatre career path from the regions to the centre. She began at the J. Průcha Theatre in Kladno; after ten years, she gained an engagement in Prague, first working at DSKN, today’s Divadlo pod Palmovkou, then at the E. F. Burian Theatre, subsequently at Divadlo Komedie, and for the last 13 years she served as dramaturge of the Drama Company of the National Theatre.
She collaborated with directors who have already entered the history of Czech theatre: at the Kladno theatre with Jaroslav Vostrý and Miloš Horanský, at the Libeň theatre with Jan Grossman, and at the National Theatre with Jan Kačer and Ivan Rajmont. Most often, she worked as dramaturge on productions directed by Michal Dočekal, with whom she moved from Divadlo Komedie to the National Theatre. In all her Prague engagements, she collaborated with director Jan Nebeský.
At the Libeň theatre, between 1985 and 1988, she contributed to several remarkable and acclaimed productions: Who’s Afraid of the Wolf by E. Albee, directed by Jan Grossman; Flight by M. Bulgakov, directed by Miloš Horanský; The Barbarians by M. Gorky, Stella by J. W. Goethe and Ghosts by H. Ibsen, directed by Jan Nebeský. She also translated the plays by Gorky and Bulgakov.
Other translations of hers that have been staged include M. Gorky’s Summerfolk, directed by J. Vostrý at the J. Průcha Theatre in Kladno; T. Bernhard’s At the Goal, directed by A. Goldflam at Divadlo Komedie; V. Sigarev’s Black Milk, directed by J. Kačer at the National Theatre; and B. Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera, directed by I. Rajmont at the National Theatre. She is also the author of several theatre adaptations.
Since 1990, she has taught at the Theatre Faculty of AMU. She heads the dramaturgy department and leads one of the five drama acting year groups. In 1996, she attained the academic rank of associate professor, and in 2015 she was appointed professor.
